It’s the most wonderful time of the year for our industry, with New Year’s resolutions motivating people to sign up with little or no effort on our part. You really do need to treat each member like gold to make sure they aren’t defecting to the competition, falling off the wagon or losing interest in your services. Member retention is key to success (and cash flow) in this business. I would fight tooth and nail to keep that member coming! I don’t want to dog on my gym, after all, they’re doing a lot of things the right way, but the fact that I haven’t gotten one email or call about my non-attendance makes me wonder how many other clubs out there might have members slipping away. This made me pause a moment, and I asked myself if I were that club owner would I notice? Would I care? Would I contact that member? The answer to all three of those questions is absolutely. She responded, “I think they have bigger things to deal with than wondering why you haven’t been in to workout”. My best friend is also a member at my gym and I asked her the other day if either the owner or instructor we regularly work out with have asked about me. I recently had minor surgery on my foot, and that, combined with follow-up doctor appointments and the holidays, has kept me out of the gym for almost a month. Personally, lifting weights is not my life’s mission and be all and end all. I’m not in that bad a shape now and I still wouldn’t like it. However, if I was overweight and out of shape and to join a gym meant that I had to have some young hottie – either male or female - measure me up and tell me what I already know – touch me and write it down while they were looking buff, slim and gorgeous etc… I would avoid that humiliation like the plague! I have seen and read this debated topic a lot over the three Januaries that I have been involved with this site and it is the same old same old. Have I left anything out?
